Horseshoe Bend sits in the Payette River canyon where the valley gives way to the mountains, about half an hour north of Boise. It is the beginning of a genuinely different building environment — more slope, more snow, more trees, and a wildfire-conscious approach to construction.
We build custom homes, renovate cabins and existing houses, and put up shops and garages throughout the Horseshoe Bend area.

What we find in Horseshoe Bend homes
Housing here runs from modest older homes in the townsite to cabins and custom houses on hillside and canyon parcels, plus manufactured homes on acreage. Cabin and older-home renovations commonly need foundation and structural attention, insulation and air sealing appropriate to the actual climate, updated electrical, and roofing designed for real snow load rather than valley conditions. Access and driveway condition are frequently as significant to the project as the building itself.
Permitting and planning in Horseshoe Bend
The City of Horseshoe Bend covers the townsite; Boise County handles the surrounding rural parcels. Snow load is materially higher than on the valley floor and drives roof framing and truss design. Slope brings engineered foundations, retaining, and serious drainage and erosion control into play. Defensible space and wildfire-conscious construction — roofing class, eave and vent detailing, and material selection — are worth building in deliberately here. Wells, septic with district health approval, seasonal access, and power service distance are all normal parts of the front-end scope on rural parcels.

Learn moreBuilding in Horseshoe Bend: common questions
Do you build in the mountains north of Boise?
Yes. Horseshoe Bend and Idaho City are both within our service area. Mountain building has real differences from valley work — snow load, slope, access, and wildfire considerations — and those need to be designed in rather than added on.
How does snow load change a house design?
Substantially. Roof framing and truss design, beam sizing, and the load path all get engineered to the local ground snow load, and roof geometry and drainage details need to account for sliding snow and ice damming. A plan drawn for the Boise valley floor generally will not permit up here without revision.
What about building season?
Site work, foundations, and exterior work are weather-dependent, and access can be seasonal on some parcels. We plan the schedule around that from the start — getting a building dried in before winter is usually the governing objective.
What our clients say about GW Construction
We specialise in helping clients get the biggest return on their investment — and we’d welcome the chance to give you a custom evaluation of your home.
“The finished work was excellent, delivered on time, and inside our budget. What more is there to ask?”
Our experience with GW Construction was outstanding from beginning to end. They were recommended to us by a real estate agent we trusted, who was helping us plan a remodel of a home we had just purchased. Past contractors had been hit or miss for us, so committing to a renovation north of $70,000 made us genuinely nervous. That changed at the first meeting. Derek listened carefully to what we wanted the remodel to accomplish and then carried the plan out faithfully. Just as valuable, he offered real insight where he saw a way to improve on our thinking, and told us plainly when an idea of ours was not economically sensible or carried a downside we had not considered. He was straightforward, transparent, and respectful throughout. Communication was excellent — calls, emails, and texts were returned promptly. He even introduced us to each of the subcontractors so we could build a relationship with them directly. Most importantly, the finished work was excellent, delivered on time, and inside our budget. What more is there to ask? Highly recommended.
Jack and Sue Serrino“He has completed more than 25 projects for my clients over the years, and I intend to keep sending them his way.”
Derek is far and away the best contractor I have worked with, and his ability to listen to my clients and respond to what they actually need has exceeded anything I expected. Being classically trained and professionally educated shows in the work. His grasp of both the practical and the possible means he handles small and large-scale jobs equally well, and there is genuinely nothing I would hesitate to refer to him. He has completed more than 25 projects for my clients over the years, and I intend to keep sending them his way.
